A message from the Museum Curator. Sounds well worth a visit if you are wlaking this area.
The museum comprising above ground welfare unit, museum cabin and underground Cold War Nuclear monitoring bunker. sits right next to stage 12 of the Ayrshire Coastal Path (a council maintained single track tarmac road avoiding the coastal A78 Largs to Skelmorlie section and is used by cyclists and walkers).
We can cater for individuals and families but with advanced notice walking groups and cycling clubs. Just to be absolutely clear if visitors wish to undertake our guided tour it takes 1.5 hours and has to be pre booked due to physical constraints of our underground Cold War Nuclear Bunker.
We see this Active Travel offering by using our Museum site which has fantastic Island and sea views over the Wemyss Bay to Rothesay Ferry Route as a waypoint to which we can offer free of charge our toilet and refreshment facilities normally on a Sunday afternoon as we are an unpaid volunteer association and this is not and has never been a commercial concern.
Other days/times for organised walking and cycling groups could be accommodated by prior agreement. There are videos of our museum site available on You Tube under Skelmorlie Secret Bunker and we are site identified on Google Maps. We have been open to the public for organised pre booked free guided tours lasting 1.5 hours since 2004.
